How To Get Around in Pattaya City

Songthaews, or baht buses as they are commonly known, are Pattaya’s most used and safest way to get around for the tourist. These open-air pickup trucks are widely used by both locals and tourists for their affordability and convenience. Songthaews in Pattaya are often color-coded, with each color indicating a specific route or area they serve.

The blue Songthaews are the most common, running along Beach Road and Second Road in a loop through the city center. This route connects popular areas like Walking Street, Pattaya Beach, and Central Festival Mall. Fares for these shared rides are typically 20-30 baht, depending on the distance. Wave at the baht bus to stop for you and pay at the end of the trip.

For those heading south to the quieter and more relaxed Jomtien Beach, look for the white Songthaews, which ply the route between Pattaya and Jomtien along Thappraya Road. If you’re venturing further out to Naklua in the northern part of Pattaya, green Songthaews offer access to the Sanctuary of Truth and surrounding neighborhoods. This type of service will wait until the pickup truck is full of customers before heading off to its destination.

For destinations beyond the main city, such as Sattahip or Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, you will need to hire a Songthaew privately. Fares are negotiable based on distance and you should expect to pay anywhere from 300-500 baht or more for a private trip. You will need to make it worthwhile for the driver because distant locations do not have many customers.

Scooters and motorbikes can be rented and are another cheap and popular way for tourists and locals to navigate the city. Ensure you wear a helmet and have your Intenational drivers license with motorbike category to cover travel insurance requirements.
